What is the BPSM Program?

PMRC, Douglas Building, RNSH

Brief Pain Self-Management (BPSM) is a group-based outpatient treatment program for people with troublesome pain.

BPSM helps participants learn the basic skills of effective self-management of pain. It is conducted by a Physiotherapist and a Clinical Psychologist who are highly experienced in pain management.

PMRC, Douglas Building, RNSH

Who is this program for?

  • If you have pain that is persisting and your doctor thinks this approach could be helpful

  • If your pain is starting to interfere with your daily life

  • If you are getting irritable or frustrated with your pain

  • If you are NOT taking strong pain medication and don't want to start those medications

  • If you would like expert guidance on how to manage your pain

How can BPSM help?

  • By helping you to understand your pain

  • By providing the latest evidence-based approach to managing your pain

  • By helping you learn the essential skills needed to minimise the effects of pain on your life

How to be Referred

Anyone considering attending the program will need to be referred by their doctor to the Pain Management & Research Centre (PMRC) at Royal North Shore Hospital for an initial assessment by our Physiotherapist and Clinical Psychologist. If we think you are suitable, we will talk to you about the program and you can then decide if you would like to attend.

Before the Program Begins

  • You will be given an appointment with our Physiotherapist to begin your preparation for the program.

  • This will include helping you to identify your goals (what you would like to get out of the program) and some education about pain.

  • We will also contact your by phone or email to confirm your attendance.

  • Your should obtain and read a copy of our book, Manage Your Pain, as that is the manual for the program.

  • You should also go to the NSW Health's ACI website that provides independent and expert information about pain that persists:

Time Commitment?

The program involves attending a two-hour session (3-5pm) once a week at the Pain Management & Research Centre for five weeks. Between sessions, we will expect you to practice the skills and exercises at home and at work.

Content of the BPSM Program

  • Education about pain - understanding your pain

  • A basic exercise program to keep you moving and functional at home and/or work

  • Pain coping skills - to help you be as independent and self-reliant as possible

Participants attend the program in groups of 6-10. Each participant has an individual management plan and sets their own goals.

After the Program

  • We will review your progress by email at four weeks and then three months after the last day of attendance.

  • Some participants may also require further individual help for a limited time, either with us or a health care provider closer to home.

Public patients attend for no charge, but those covered by accident insurance will require approval from their insurer.

For More Information

For more information, we recommend that you log on to the ACI website. This is funded by the NSW Ministry of Health and provides expert and independent advice on pain management options.

This website includes a link to an easy-to-understand video clip the that explains pain.
